I am sure it is common to feel mad love for anyone involved in the whole magical miracle surrounding your birth experience. But I think it is UNCOMMON to feel mad love coming back at you and that you will be remembered. That's Roots. The thing I valued most about my experience at Roots is how thorough and caring all the midwives were. As a first-timer at pregnancy and delivery, I was nervous and wanted to have a good experience. I checked out a Fairview Clinic, the U of M Hospital, and Health Foundations Birth Center in St. Paul. Nothing against those - but Roots was such a different experience! There was always SO MUCH time to ask questions and they wanted to know how we were doing emotionally, mentally, and spiritually - as well as physically. I felt like the whole pregnancy and delivery were MY experience - how I wanted it, even though I had NO IDEA going into it what it was I wanted at all. Every prenatal appointment we left smiling - not having to wait long, getting loads of attention, having appropriate things to think about for where we were at in our pregnancy, and with tools to help with any little thing that was difficult about the pregnancy. The classes were great - getting to meet the other families who were delivering at Roots confirmed that this is a community I wanted to be part of. My delivery was - lucky me, I guess, one of the 5% that ends up in an emergency situation. My placenta separated from the umbilical cord and stayed inside, which put me at risk for bleeding out. Up until that point it was so amazing - as soon as labor started I was in communication with the midwives and they helped us to labor at home as long as we could, which is what we wanted to do. Getting settled in the birthing suite, I felt completely comfortable being the "star of the show" Rebecca, Britt, our doula-Corenia, and my husband all gave me support and/or space when I needed either. If I ever looked to anyone for reassurance it was there in their faces, but I never felt anyone was getting impatient or judging how I was doing this really awkward and crazy thing. It really felt like everyone was just in the moment with me. When I finally got the baby out and WOOHOO, I thought it was over and I could start celebrating, Rebecca quickly informed us that we had an emergency and she totally took control in a way that made me assured. I never felt scared once through the emergency interventions Rebecca took, the ambulance ride (which Rebecca accompanied me on), leaving my newborn behind at the center with Britt, Corenia and my husband, arriving at North Memorial, and going through the excruciating pain (worse than the labor, if you ask me!) to get my placenta out. Rebecca stayed with me the whole time, reassuring me, holding my hand, advocating for me, explaining everything that was happening... until my husband, the baby and my family were able to join us and we were all stable and good. The follow-up care in our home was amazing, too. It was so great to have support without feeling that there was any disruption to settling into our new life and healing. I was sad to have our last check-up with our midwives. It has been so nice feeling a part of the Roots community. I would recommend Roots to anyone who wants to feel "love" and "spirit" as part of the process of growing and welcoming your baby into the world.

I absolutely love Roots. They will forever have a place in my heart and that of my husband Logan. They are family now lol! I plan to have all of my babies here. It was important to me to have my child brought into the world surrounded by feminine energy and brown folks, and all of the midwives really worked hard to make us feel safe, listened to, educated, prepared and understood with our first child. I took at least a dozen classes there over my pregnancy between the standard classes offered by midwives and those offered by an outside birth coach. I really do love each and every one of them. Holly provided absolutely amazing aftercare at my home. I love that they make multiple visits the weeks after to support the baby and the parents with the recovery and new lifestyle. We have a happy, healthy, fat and confident 7 month old who was brought into the world peacefully and lovingly and I really believe his progress has a lot to do with the support I had in delivery and the months preceding it. I really appreciated that they made sure to have us meet multiple times with each midwife during our check ups to make sure that we were comfortable with the incredibly capable Ali, Rosa, and Rebecca as well as the midwives in training since it isn't always guaranteed that you give birth on your due date. They each knew us well and we were confident that whoever was with us, we would be able to trust and feel comfort with. Our little on was born in less than 40 minutes of arriving, but my blood pressure was very low after giving birth. They took care of us and wouldn't let us leave until they were sure we were both in good working order. I know that for us this was the BEST choice. I knew that a hospital setting would have added to my stress and in the end my stress could have stressed my baby. Giving birth naturally was important to me as well. The experience was as pleasant as pushing an 8 plus pound baby out your vagina could be but in all seriousness I have very wonderful memories of the day I gave birth and the whole 9 months that I spent with roots (6 weeks pregnant to 6 weeks post birth). I am so grateful to them and I will send anyone who will listen.

I cannot say enough great things about the amazing care we received at Roots Birth Center! Our first son was born via C section so we were looking for a place that would be supportive of a VBAC. Roots far exceeded our expectations!!! Throughout the whole pregnancy, they gave us options and always supported our choices. Our birth was amazing. I was able to labor and deliver in the tub without any interventions. The midwives were so supportive, encouraging and calm. I was treated like any other natural birth mama, which isn’t always the case with a VBAC. The home care we received after was exceptional as well. Our birth journey with Roots has brought so much emotional healing and joy. We are so blessed.

I love Roots! It is filled with respectful and powerful women. The kind of people you should surround yourself with while you're going through such an amazing life experience! First of all I want to thank you all for the superb care and support through my first pregnancy, quick labor and delivery ;), and all the wonderful postpartum care and follow-up. As a first time mom I knew little about the process but knew that I wanted it to go "my way" and all natural. The women at Roots never questioned my opinions or feelings, and definitely never made me feel like I wasn't in control. The postpartum care in my home was the best as I healed and couldn't imagined not having someone to follow-up with right away (Thanks Holly!). Such a great experience, I wouldn't have changed anything!
